I believe splitting the community would not be a good thing to strive for. I really, really can't stand the new forum software either. Just looking at it annoys me. But at the same time, I think that if the vast majority of the community is fine with it, then I'll just have to accept it. Well, if the moderators don't ban me first, that is. Unfortunately the people behind the scenes never put it up for a poll, so we'll never know if people actually wanted this or not.
(And I can't believe we ended up with an IF community that actually has "people behind the scenes"; in the past we used to joke about it. The "IF Cabal." The joke's on us now.)
And no, I don't have a server either.

Btw, there's also www.joltcountry.com/phpBB3 which actually has been around for a long time (I believe it used to be a dial-up BBS many years ago.) Not many people there, only regulars. It's being run by Robb Sherwin. The IF section is more like a Hugo section though. But at least it seems like a better solution than a boards.net forum :-) There's also less moderation or censorship compared to intfiction.org. It's assumed that people are grown-ups. I've been there for years now. It's where we discuss and coordinate development about the Hugo compiler and interpreter (almost all of Robb's games are written with Hugo.)

Well, I think at this point, the community is already split. The people who seriously can't stand Discourse are going to leave the main forum, so I'll keep this open as an alternative. I'll take a look at joltcountry too Thanks for the pointer I hope you stick around here, realnc, but I understand if this also doesn't suit you. If nothing else, consider it just another IF forum.

I'm thinking the vast majority of the community is not fine with the change to Discourse, just the people who haven't already abandoned ship.
There's even blowback growing on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/interactivefiction/comments/auscve/the_interactive_fiction_community_forum/

I mean, and if you really want something that "everyone owns" then there's P2P forum solutions: retroshare.cc/But those do require a lot of top-loading technical install stuff for people to even get onboard... so...
